Let’s face it – teenagers have a lot going on! Puberty affects them mentally and physically in so many ways. But did you know that all of those extra hormones can also play havoc in their mouths? During puberty their gums are likely to be more sensitive due to increased blood flow, making them more susceptible to plaque and gingivitis. But making sure they have a clean, healthy smile is something we can definitely help you out with.
In New Zealand basic dental services are free for all eligible teens from Year 9 until they turn 18 years old. As your comprehensive West Auckland family dental clinic, McIntosh Dental is proud to provide free dental care for eligible teens.
We love working with teens. This is an ideal opportunity to make sure they have great oral health habits, so we will teach them brushing and flossing techniques, advise on toothbrushes and other ways they can maintain good oral health. We want to give them the best chance of keeping those healthy smiles and minimise the risk of developing any major dental problems.
Which Dental Services Are Included?
Eligible teenagers are entitled to one free annual check-up, and the services include:
- Dental examinations
- Cleaning, scaling and polishing
- Dental x-rays
- Preventative treatments such as fluoride treatment or fissure sealants
- Root canals
- Tooth extractions (non-orthodontic)
Which Dental Services Are Not Included?
Although orthodontic treatments such as braces are not free, orthodontic referrals can be provided.
If we discover an issue that requires more extensive treatment, we will discuss your options with you. Although extensive treatments may not be covered under the free teen dental services, as a full-service family dental practice we can take care of all of your dental needs – so your teen is in good hands with us.
Fear Of The Dentist
It’s really common for teenagers to be reluctant to visit the dentist. We get it – it’s not the most fun way to spend their time! And we understand that sometimes that reluctance can be due to feeling anxious and even out-right scared that it will hurt.
That’s why we take the time to talk through exactly what the appointment will entail so there are no surprises and we can cover off any questions before we begin. We listen to any concerns you have and make sure you are as comfortable as possible. For our nervous patients we will ensure we use adequate local anaesthetic to keep you pain-free. We also offer Drift Away Anxiety Management, where patients wear noise-cancelling headphones – not a single drill to be heard!
When a teenager is embarrassed about their smile, it can really impact on their confidence. Making use of our free dental services for teens is an easy way to protect their smile and self-esteem.
Ongoing Dental Care After Turning 18
When your teen turns 18 they are no longer eligible for free dental services. To make it easy and affordable to continue to protect their oral health, we offer a dental savings plan called Smilesaver for routine dental care.
