Helping Your Child’s Smile Develop Well

Early orthodontics for kids focuses on guiding development rather than correcting bigger issues later on. By assessing growth while your child’s jaw is still changing, we can spot potential concerns early and plan care at the right time.

At McIntosh Dental, we offer orthodontic assessments for children from around age 7. In many cases, this means monitoring progress over time and checking in as your child’s teeth and bite develop.

What Is Early Intervention Orthodontics?

Early assessment and monitoring usually takes place between ages 7 and 12.

  • It looks at jaw growth, bite position and how adult teeth are coming through
  • Treatment may involve guiding development rather than starting braces straight away
  • In some cases, early care can reduce the complexity of braces for kids later on
  • Any plan is tailored to your child’s stage of growth and dental needs

Early intervention doesn’t always mean immediate treatment. Sometimes the most helpful step is observation and regular review.

Signs Your Child May Benefit From an Orthodontic Check

  • Baby teeth falling out much earlier or later than expected
  • Crowded, overlapping or crooked teeth
  • Mouth breathing, snoring or thumb sucking beyond age five
  • Jaw clicking, shifting teeth or signs of discomfort
  • Difficulty chewing, biting or speaking clearly

An assessment helps confirm whether these signs are part of normal development or something worth addressing early.

How Early Orthodontic Care Works

Early Assessment and Monitoring (Phase 1)

We usually recommend an initial assessment between ages seven and nine. At this stage, we check jaw growth, dental development and bite alignment, then monitor changes if treatment isn’t needed yet.

Functional Appliances

Some children benefit from early appliances such as plates or expanders. These can help create space for adult teeth or guide bite development before all permanent teeth have erupted.

Braces and Aligners (Phase 2)

Once adult teeth are in place, comprehensive orthodontic treatment may be recommended. This can include fixed braces or clear aligners such as Invisalign First or Invisalign Teen, depending on what suits your child best.

A Preventative, Measured Approach

Early orthodontic care can help reduce the likelihood of more invasive treatment later, including surgery or extractions. We only recommend early treatment when it offers a clear long-term benefit.

Care That Stays Connected

As a full-service clinic, your child’s orthodontic care stays coordinated with their general dental care. Our dentists and orthodontic team work closely together as your child grows.
