Great oral hygiene is not just essential for good oral health, it also has the ability to improve your overall well-being. Because it has been proven that electric toothbrushes help greatly in decreasing plaque and gingivitis, electric toothbrushes are said to be more effective at cleaning your teeth than manual ones.

Many patients do not understand the importance of choosing the right toothbrush. Various oral health professionals encourage their patients to switch to electric. Electric toothbrushes ensure that mouths are kept as clean as possible – significantly reducing the risk of cavities and the chance of developing gingivitis. Those who use a manual toothbrush are more likely to brush too hard, damaging their gums and teeth.

Benefits of Electric Toothbrushes

There are many different types of electric toothbrushes and they are all equipped with different features. The key benefits of electric toothbrushes are outlined below.

Brushing Timers

Built-in timers, a common feature of electric toothbrushes, advise you once you’ve brushed long enough that your teeth and gums are clean. This ensures that you are brushing for the correct amount of time to guarantee an effective clean.

Better at Removing Plaque

It’s been proven that electric toothbrushes decrease more plaque and gingivitis than normal toothbrushes. Studies have shown that when using an electric toothbrush, plaque is reduced by up to 21% and gingivitis by 11%.

Ensure Healthier Gums

If an electric toothbrush is used properly, it should not damage your gums or teeth and instead improve your overall oral health.

Effective Vibration Techniques

The bristles of electric toothbrushes vibrate/rotate to assist in removing any buildup of plaque you may have on your teeth or gums. The vibration of the bristles allows for a greater number of micro-movements when you brush your teeth. Oscillating (or rotating) electric toothbrushes are said to work better than vibrating ones.

Fun For Kids!

It can be difficult to get a kid to brush their teeth. Electric toothbrushes can be more engaging for a child and they make up for any lack of skill in brushing their teeth. Electric toothbrushes can also establish good cleaning and healthy practices in a child.

Make Brushing a Game!

The New Electric Toothbrush App for Kids

Philips Sonicare recently released a new electric toothbrush that makes oral hygiene much more exciting for kids. The key feature of the toothbrush is an app that intends to improve children’s brushing habits. Similar to that of a game, the app features a little character named Sparkly who encourages kids to brush their teeth.

The Philips Sonicare app syncs to your child’s toothbrush via Bluetooth and encourages them to learn more about oral care while playing. The app has a built-in coaching feature – a great way to keep children engaged as they learn techniques in how to best brush their teeth. Each brushing session begins with clear instructions about good brushing techniques and the app has the ability to monitor and track the performance. The electric toothbrush has two child-friendly power modes – low for younger children and high for older kids. The toothbrush also encompasses a ‘KidTimer’ which helps to ensure that kids brush for the recommended 2 minutes. To add to this, a ‘KidPacer’ signals the child to move to an additional quadrant of their mouth.

The app gives children the ability to learn how to brush properly by themselves. Kids can view through the app how well they’ve done, and they are rewarded with prizes such as food or accessories for their Sparkly. The character also likes to have clean teeth and it gets happier the more the children brush and the better that they do it. The Philips Sonicare Kids Connected Electric Toothbrush also comes with stickers so that the toothbrush can be personalized.

Using sonic technology with 500 strokes per second, the electric toothbrush is said to be up to 75% more effective than a regular toothbrush. The dynamic action of the toothbrush effectively reaches between the teeth and gum with great cleaning power.

The app can track and recognize when a session starts, ends, is paused or is completed. The Bluetooth app helps kids to slowly increase the time they spend brushing. 98% of parents have said that using Philip’s electric toothbrush kids brush longer and better.

Although there are a few cons to going electric, such as the price of the toothbrush or having to replace the heads every four to six weeks, the overall benefits are much greater. Electric toothbrushes mean that you don’t have to know exactly how to brush your teeth, given the same time, an electric toothbrush will provide a more advanced clean than a manual one.
