As experts in Botox and dermal fillers as well as cosmetic dentistry, we are among the most qualified to advise our patients on the best solutions for their needs. So, let’s answer some of the questions that our patients ask us the most: here are our Botox FAQs.

Is Botox safe?

The medication is very reliable and safe and is one of the most popular and commonly used cosmetic treatments. It is an approved medicine registered with the New Zealand Ministry of Health. Your Dentist will discuss any potential side effects and review your medical history to ensure you are a good candidate for treatment.

Does Botox hurt?

Botox and dermal fillers are administered through a series of injections into the targeted facial muscles. Extremely fine, sterile, disposable needles are used. It’s common for the injections to sting a little when they are being administered. However, this only lasts for a few seconds.

Some minor swelling, redness, bruising, itching and tightening of the skin are all normal immediately after treatment. This can last for a few days, and paracetamol can be taken although it is usually not necessary.

Will my face look frozen?

That frozen look, or ‘Botox face’ is caused when too much Botox is used, and it lessens your ability to make normal facial expressions. That’s why it is important to only use a Dentist who is experienced and qualified in administering Botox. The treatment should still look natural and allow a full range of facial expressions.

How long does Botox last?

Results are not immediate – they begin to appear a few days following treatment, and full results take up to two weeks to show. The effects of Botox are temporary as it disappears naturally from the body over time. The results can last from several weeks through to several months. For the best long-term results, it is recommended that patients have Botox treatments two to three times per year.

Is it true that Botox is preventative?

Yes! Because Botox weakens the targeted muscles in your face, it prevents them from moving and causing wrinkles. In this way starting Botox early, such as in your late 20s to early 30s, can help prevent deep wrinkles from forming.
